5 Portable Storage Container Packing Techniques to Avoid

For many of us, if we didn’t learn things the hard way, we wouldn’t learn anything at all. That’s why we’re here, to tell you the moving and packing techniques to avoid.

If you’re using a storage container as a trash bin, for example, you’re doing it wrong. As you are if you’re packing all heavy items on one side or toward the front. Let’s discuss these missteps and a few of the other techniques you shouldn’t pursue when it comes to portable storage containers

5 Portable Storage Container Packing Techniques To Avoid

1. Packing on Uneven Ground

For starters, portable storage containers are best on flat, level ground. (Many storage container companies won’t deliver unless there is a spot like this.) Without even ground, items can shift while packing or transporting and there’s a higher risk of injury. Coordinate with the company on the best place for your container, including which way you want the door facing.

2. Using the Wrong Container Size

Make sure you have enough containers, as it’s better to have too much space than too little. If you don’t get the right container size, it may require multiple trips or you’ll have to call the container company to see if they have another one available. At SAM (Store & Move), we have a storage calculator to help you determine the size and number of containers needed for your move.

3. Putting All Heavy Items On One Side

There are two rules of thumb when it comes to packing weight:

  1. Put the heaviest boxes on the bottom.
  2. Don’t put all heavy items on one side.

The former prevents other boxes from being crushed and toppling while the latter helps prevent shifting and damage.

4. Using the Container for Trash

Use the container the way it was intended. That means refraining from using the container as a trash bin before, during and/or after your move. There is a large list of items that don’t belong on a moving truck or storage container, and many of them are to protect the container itself and ensure the safety of those transporting it.

5. Not Securing the Container

Finally, make sure your items are secured after they’re packed. This means locking it up at night (or whenever you’re not using it) and avoiding packing during the rain or when it’s excessively windy. You don’t want all of your packing efforts to go to waste, do you?
