6 Tips for Your Decluttering New Years Resolution

Don’t look now, but 2020 is officially in the rear-view mirror. If there’s any year that would be ideal for a fresh start and a new way of doing things, it’s 2021.

Many of us choose to declutter, downsize or organize our homes as part of our New Year’s Resolution. If that sounds ideal to you, here are some tips to get you started.

1. Write Down a Goal

You are 42 percent more likely to achieve your goals if you write them down, according to an article by Inc. Magazine. Set a realistic goal to start, like decluttering one room or one section of the house. Then you can “stretch” or adapt your goal into a new one if you meet it.

2. Watch Inspirational Videos

YouTube isn’t just for kids shows, music videos and cat montages. Take advantage of this platform for decluttering tips and inspiration! Here are a few examples of decluttering videos you’ll find on YouTube:

3. Organize By Give/Trash/Store

Part of decluttering is getting rid of items—or getting them out of the way, at least. You can organize your methods for doing this by creating three categories for item removal: giving them away, trashing them or storing them. Use trash bags, bins or another method to actually do it.

4. Rent a Storage Container

Wait, rent a storage container? Before you know how much you need to store? A storage container is ideal even if just needed for a short-term storage solution, as it allows you to remove items from the home while you decide on what to do with them. Portable storage containers can even be left on site for easy access as you declutter.

5. Do One Room at a Time

How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time. OK, it’s an archaic saying, but it goes to show that you shouldn’t try to tackle big projects all at once. Just as you should set realistic goals, you should take realistic actions if you want to accomplish your decluttering goal.

6. Pace Yourself

Just as you shouldn’t tackle everything at once, you shouldn’t tackle everything as fast as you can, either. You’ll get burned out that way. Take your time and pace yourself.
