Junk can bring us down… especially when it feels like we can’t escape it. (e.g. “Didn’t I just clean this room? Why is it full of clutter?”) For many of us, it can bring the fear of being featured on an episode of Hoarders. Nobody wants that!
Fortunately, following a few best practices and finding the right motivation can change things. Here are some decluttering tips for the junk drawer and a few other typically messy areas of your home.
Junk Drawer Decluttering Tips
First, the area mentioned in the title. From pens and hair ties to screws and outlet covers, all sorts of random household knick-knacks tend to end up in one drawer (usually in the kitchen). This “junk drawer” can quickly fill and become overwhelming, mainly because there are so many things that don’t go together. To declutter your junk drawer, here are some tips:
- Determine what you need: you don’t have to keep everything in the junk drawer. Consider donating, trashing or selling anything extra or unnecessary.
- Split items up into categories: such as the room it belongs in, then organize accordingly. Put cords in the office, chargers with electronics and so forth.
- Organize the remaining items: user dividers or a silverware tray to keep the drawer nice and tidy moving forward.
Closet Decluttering Tips
One of the next most-common areas in the house that gets decluttered easily is the closet. It’s easy to get complacent and think that just because most guests don’t see this area, you can put your clutter, junk or worn clothes here. Whether on the ground, on a shelf or somewhere else, clutter in your closet can make you feel stifled and unproductive. As with the junk drawer, you can organize and clean up your closet by determining what you need, moving anything that doesn’t belong and organizing or storing remaining items.
(If you’ve found you have nowhere else to store extra closet items, by the way, a residential storage container is a great option. It’s also ideal for storing extra household items in general.)
Cabinet Decluttering Tips
There are plenty of additional areas in your home that can accumulate clutter, but the last one we’ll cover (for now) is your cabinets. Whether in the kitchen, bathroom or another room, these get cluttered up quickly because they’re behind closed doors. It can be tempting to throw an item on the floor in the cabinet and subsequently pile on but where does it end? You can take a lay of the land with your cabinets and determine what is and isn’t needed, then proceed from there. You should be getting the hang of it now, so move on to other rooms of your home as you can.
For the junk drawer and beyond, storage containers can help you get rid of clutter and keep extra belongings out of the way. Contact us at 972-GET-A-SAM for a quote today.
