Real-Life Alternative Uses for Portable Storage Containers

Portable storage containers are often used for something practical, like storing residential or commercial items. They’re great for storing jobsite equipment during construction projects, household items during renovations and for keeping seasonal items safe and out of the way.

Some people, however, turn portable storage containers into something more… unique.

While we don’t recommend that any of our customers do this (our containers are rented, not purchased, after all), we can appreciate the creativity. Here is a not-so-serious look at some real-life alternative uses for portable storage containers out there:

Standalone Buildings

Real-Life Alternative Uses for Portable Storage Containers

You could theoretically use a container as-is for a temporary man cave or she shed, but some have also permanently transformed them into standalone, portable buildings. Some companies like the Grass Roof Company even make a business out of it, turning containers into living rooms or breakfast nooks.

Above-Ground Pools

A modern take on the above-ground pools, some storage containers are completely refurbished and upgraded to accommodate water (don’t try this with normal containers, however). Companies like Modpools make these container pools, which are modular and can have features like temperature control, lighting and jets.

Eco-Friendly Bridges

A bridge made from storage containers? That’s what’s happening in Tel Aviv, as an architect firm (Yoav Messer) is using old containers to create a walkway that leads from a popular road straight into a city park.

Playground

In Australia, an architect firm (Phooey Architects) converted several containers into a children’s activity center/playground. Thanks to the sturdy construction of these steel containers, you can bet that they’ll withstand rough-housing from kids!

Food Truck

Hobo Food is a food truck focused on being eco-friendly and leaving a neutral carbon footprint. While their food centers around chicken, their truck centers around the fact that it was converted from an old storage container.

Gardens

Storage containers are even ideal for nurseries or indoors gardens, as they’re ideally shaped for rows of plants and lights. Some companies even carve out windows to allow natural light in, which is ideal for plants as well.

Cities

You can pretty much make any type of building with storage containers, as Container City is trying to prove. They’ve already made “mini cities” with buildings like apartments, administration buildings and marketing suites—all from containers.
